Conquering your 2017 New Year’s Resolutions

It is that time of the year again when we sit back and reflect on the year. We also begin to envision the coming year and what we’d like to get out of it. For many of us, our resolutions center around health, “this year I will eat better, exercise more, and get more sleep.” While these are all great resolutions, they are destined to fail because they are too vague and unmeasurable. For 2017, set resolutions that are detailed, tailored, and achievable to make this your greatest year.

1. Set the right goals

This is the most important thing when setting any goal in life. Develop goals that will push you, but not ones that are impossible. There is such a thing as being too ambitious. If you decide you’re going to lose 30 pounds in two months, you may not achieve this goal and become discouraged. Instead, set smaller goals like to lose 2 lbs in a week. Meeting these smaller ones will give you the motivation to conquer your overall goals.

2. Create a plan to achieve those goals

Setting goals is not enough, it is just the beginning. You need to develop a plan to achieve these goals if you want to be successful. Even the smallest goal needs a plan. Most goals cannot be done with a single action, but require continuous effort. If your goal is to lose two pounds a week, keep a journal of your workout plan and diet for that week. This way you can see what is working and what is not.

3. Try new things

Trying new things is the key to furthering your development. If you’re trying to eat healthy, but don’t like fish, don’t cut out seafood entirely. There are many ways to cook up seafood to eliminate the fishy taste that tends to be unfavorable amongst people. If you’re looking to change up your workout plan, try taking new classes your gym offers. You may have never kickboxed in your life, but signing up for kickboxing may be the key to your weight loss success.

4. Inspire others

There are two main reasons to do this. One is it is great to give back. Think of the person who has inspired you the most. Would you have been able to overcome your obstacles if it weren’t for this person? Become this person for others. The second reason is your inspiration to others can be your motivation. You will work harder to achieve your goals if you know you have people watching and learning from you.
